Vintage Basics {Underpinnings}

Here is my final installment of Vintage Basics. I'm sorry that it took me so long to get the last post up. I don't know why, I guess I just get to easily distracted on the internet, I can't help myself. LOL!

Slips - For me is an absolute MUST!!! Every time I wear I dress or blouse and skirt combo, I always pull out my slips, camis, or half-slips. Slips are there to give you that extra layer of modesty. I feel awkward whenever I cannot wear a slip with a dress or skirt. I'm always thinking, "What if someone can see right through the fabric??" I always have these babies handy!

Crinoline - I only own one crinoline petticoat and it's a formal/wedding crinoline for longer skirts. It's my way to cheat out of wearing a caged hoop. I adore these cute petticoats. They come in all sorts of lovely colors. And if you're a bit daring and chose a color that might accent the fabric, when it peaks from under the hem, it makes a nice statement without being unladylike.

Girdles - I don't own a single girdle. I have some modern shape wear, which I guess is the equivalent. I would love to own a vintage girdle, but wow they are expensive. So I think I'm gonna browse the intimates section of K-mart and see what they have to offer. Some modern pieces have vintage inspired design.

Garter Belts - The garter belt shown above is actually mine. I purchased it at an antique shop and finally found out a few months back that it is in fact 1940s. Jackpot!!! I will be wearing it as much as possible if I ever get the laces replaced on it!

Hosiery - Vintage hosiery...absolutely not a must! I loathe hosiery. Growing up in a area where summer is both hot and humid, wearing hosiery is ridiculous for me. And I rip my pantyhose as soon as I get it on sometimes, so I would hate to ruin a pair of vintage hosiery and instead would opt for thigh high modern nylons instead.

Corsets - I had a corset a few years ago. I bought it from Frederick's of Hollywood because between them and Victoria's secret, they had both nice and decent priced corsets. Well, the one I bought never fit me right. Mom talked me into getting a corset with straps and I think for that very reason, it never worked. All the support was in the straps and not lacing. So now I'm searching for a decent corset once more.

Brassieres/Panties - I just don't like the idea of wearing used underwear. I don't know how many women have used those bras or panties before me and I can't stand the idea of them touching my most personal areas. I cringe just thinking about it.

{Psst, I know I've used a bit of Bernie Dexter pictures in these posts. She's such a lovely model and has a great vintage/rockabilly look to her as well!}

  1. Great post! I feel the same as you about used undies. I've never bought either used because I was raised that people don't share undies even sisters. You don't know if that other person has good hygiene.
    As for hosiery I LOVE stockings and have been wearing them since high school but despise panty hose. They were never flattering on my and always ripped.

    1. I didn't even recognize your name when I first saw it! It's so pretty! :) That's my exact point. I'm such a stickler for hygiene I HATE sharing stuff like that. I haven't tried thigh high hosiery yet, so I might have a similar problem.

  2. I'm with you on vintage underwear. It also bothers me when I see a model wearing vintage underwear lol. I think if it's sealed NOS it might be okay. I also don't have any vintage bras. The only vintage I have in under garments is some pantyhose. I think with today's reproductions these work nicely although some are very pricey. I'm on the look out for a wasp waist girdle. I don't know if I will or will not buy one. I'm wanting it for the "New Look". I have such a difficult time with petticoats. I watch them on ebay and hmm and haw about if they will work okay and end up not bidding lol. I do need one in black and white but just another thing to add to the want list:))) Great post!

    1. Yes, if they can guarantee me it's NEVER been used, then I have no problem wearing it. I don't either. All I wear are modern undergarments, besides my vintage insp slips. You might see if etsy can hand make you one. It may be pricey, but so will a vintage one. Oh, I have tons of vintage insp petticoats on my ebay watch list. Search under costumes, they aren't vintage, but have a great vintage look.

  3. Wonderful post, Sean! Pretty and practical, feminine undergarments like these are a must in my wardrobe, too. I don't have a huge collection of underpinnings, but what I do have fits well and gets plenty of use. My favourite slip is a great one from the 40s that's white on top and black on the bottom (of the same slip), so that you can wear a light coloured shirt and dark skirt with out needing to use a slip plus separate camisole. Such a clever, useful idea!

    1. Thank you! :) That's always good. It's better to have quality over quantity. Now, that sounds nice. I have a white cami and a black half slip that would do the same job, but they do have a tendency to move on me. Ugh!

  4. Under garments are SO much fun. I love shopping for them and trying on, especially corsets. I agree that actual pre-worn items are a bit of a turn off though.

    1. I would love to raid the "What Katie Did" shop. But I'd probably end up bankrupt! LOL!

  5. Wonderful post. I love crinolines and I want to get some of the more vibrant colore ones. Right now I only have a black one but it fits with almost all of my dresses so it was the most pratical color option for me.
    I agree about the vintage undies! I'm not all that comfortable with used clothes in general, but especially not undergarments. Most of my vintage wardrobe are repops, I have a bit of a germ phobia, I guess. Anywho, thanks so much for this post. It is very helpful.

    1. Thank you, Deborah for stopping by! I have only one and it's white. So I need more variety. I don't mind used clothes, most of what I purchase is either thrifted or vintage. I hate paying retail. You're very welcome!
